The Canadian Deceased Registry™ recorded 17,979 newly deceased individuals in May 2025, marking the lowest monthly total in over two years.
This represents a 12% decrease from April’s total of 20,435 and a 14% decrease compared to May 2024, when 20,862 deaths were recorded. It’s also notably lower than the monthly average over the past year, which has typically hovered between 20,000 and 22,000.

Provincial Highlights:
- Ontario reported 6,949 deaths in May, down from 7,925 in April—a sharp 12% decline.
- Quebec also saw a significant dip, with 4,670 deaths compared to 5,417 in April, a 14% drop.
- Alberta and British Columbia both posted month-over-month declines as well, continuing a steady downward trend seen since March.
- Saskatchewan showed the steepest percentage drop, with only 657 deaths in May—its lowest in over three years.
These declines are consistent across most provinces and mirror seasonal trends, as mortality rates tend to decrease with the arrival of warmer weather.
Year-to-Date Totals (Jan–May 2025)
As of the end of May, the Canadian Deceased Registry™ has recorded 107,431 deaths for 2025. Here’s how that compares with the same five-month period in previous years:
- 2025 YTD: 107,431
- 2024 YTD: 111,584
- 2023 YTD: 116,766
That’s a 3.7% decline from 2024 and an 8% decline from 2023, suggesting that the overall mortality rate in Canada is softening in 2025. This could reflect improvements in public health, fewer seasonal illness outbreaks, or other demographic factors.
